W. J. T. Mitchell is an editor of Critical Inquiry and the author of Image Science: Iconology, Visual Cultures, and Media Aesthetics (University of Chicago Press, 2015) and What Do Pictures Want?: The Lives and Loves of Images (University of Chicago Press, 2004). Currently, he is working on two books about individual and collective forms of madness: Mental Traveler: A Journey through Schizophrenia and Seeing Through Madness: Insanity, Media, and Visual Culture. Mitchell is the Gaylord Donnelley Distinguished Service Professor in the Departments of English Language and Literature, Art History, and Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago.
